Meet the Artist

Ever wanted to know more about the talent behind our prints? Come sit down with us as we chat with the artists, and learn more about them and their day-to-day life.

Tell us a bit about yourself

Hi, I'm a self-taught surface pattern designer, renovator, and nurse who enjoys learning new things and pursuing many passions. My greatest love, however, is creating. I love designing patterns and images that can be used on a variety of products, such as fabric, to spread love and joy to people through my art. I strive to be kind, and I always try to have fun despite my busy lifestyle. As a mother of two boys of different ages, they keep me on my toes and bring me great joy.

How long have you been creating your art?

As an artist with a diploma in visual arts from 20 years ago, my creative journey has taken me down various paths. However, I have never stopped creating, and my passion for art has remained unwavering. Recently, I made the decision to pursue my artistic career more seriously and turned my focus towards designing fabric and other product surfaces. It's been an exciting journey so far, and I'm thrilled to be doing what I love professionally. There's no turning back now, and I look forward to continuing to grow and develop as an artist.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

My designs draw inspiration from various aspects of my life, including my children, garden, nature, and the places where I live and come from. Being of Latvian origin and living in Australia, I'm influenced by both cultures, and this blend is evident in my designs. As a mother, designing cute patterns for children is particularly close to my heart. Along with my passion for art, I also enjoy a range of creative pursuits like renovations, sewing, gardening, and cooking, and these interests often find their way into my designs. In essence, my designs reflect my love for life and creating, and I find inspiration in everything around me.

What’s the most exciting thing you’ve seen your art on?

It brings me great joy to see my art come to life on a variety of products, particularly when someone has taken the time to create something special using my designs. For me, it's a magical journey of creativity, inspiration, and joy all mixed in one and let out into the world. I love the collaborative nature of the creative process, where someone designs, someone else makes, and another person uses the end product. Recently, I was thrilled to see a client decorate their entire kitchen with my designed wallpaper, and it was a wonderful feeling to know that my art had made someone's living space extra special. Seeing my designs being enjoyed by others is incredibly fulfilling and motivates me to continue creating.

What is your favourite art style at the moment?

As an artist, I love exploring new styles and experimenting with different color palettes. My art styles and preferences are constantly evolving, and I enjoy the creative freedom that comes with trying new things. Interestingly, I also have a deep appreciation for styles that I don't necessarily use in my work. I find that my art style is very polar, with designs that are either cute and naive or sophisticated and geometric, often a mix of the two. What comes out in my work is always from the heart and inspired by my inner self. I'm passionate about creating art that reflects my unique perspective and style, and I enjoy the creative journey of exploring new ideas and techniques.

When you're not creating, what do you get up to?

When I'm not creating art, I split my time between renovating homes and working on my surface pattern design business.

And finally, where can we find you?

I am based in Cairns, Queensland, Australia and here I renovate homes and do my surface pattern designing. I am very open to requests and custom designs. My email address is upcycboom@hotmail.com and my Instagram account is Anzela (@anzela_simcock) • Instagram photos and videos I am working on creating my website, but that is still a little while away.

Thank you for having me here on Cloth Cuts and hope you can find some of my designs useful for your projects. Would love to see what you make xoxo
