Meet the Artist

Ever wanted to know more about the talent behind our prints? Come sit down with us as we chat with the artists, and learn more about them and their day-to-day life.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I am an artist living with my husband and daughter in beautiful Bayside, Melbourne. I recently won a tough battle with breast cancer, which saw me moving away from my successful graphic design business and focusing more on my true passion of surface pattern design and illustration. I started Christy Lou Art just after I was diagnosed and I haven’t looked back. I love seeing my artwork on fabric, products, on walls in people’s homes, as well as on greeting cards and in children’s storybooks. It fills me with so much joy.

How long have you been creating your art?

From the time I could first pick up a pencil I have loved being an artist. I was always compelled to draw and paint as a kid and this desire is still in me. I am fully content when I am in the zone creating art, hours can go by without me even noticing. This is my happy place.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Living close to nature and the sea in Bayside, my recovery from breast cancer has been fuelled by the natural beauty surrounding me and a desire to express my gratitude by creating beautiful art and sharing it with the world.

I love creating uplifting, feel-good artwork based on what I see around me. I am constantly taking photos and using these as inspiration for my artwork. My daily walks have been known to take longer than planned as I stop so many times to photograph things along the way. I also tap into fond memories that I have, many of these from my childhood. I aim to make my art meaningful, creating a connection for the viewer.

What’s the most exciting thing you’ve seen your art on?

My surface pattern designs have come to life on products such as phone cases, notepads and bags. My favourite so far has been seeing my art made into aprons – even though I dislike cooking! It has been a delight partnering with Cloth Cuts and having my surface patterns brought to life on beautiful fabric. I have also loved seeing my illustrations in children’s story books and hearing how they have brought happiness, peace and confidence to so many children.

What is your favourite art style at the moment?

My favourite style of art at the moment is bright and playful. I mostly love using paints, pencils and fineliner for my creations, however I’m really enjoying designing digitally at the moment. Having previously worked as a graphic designer for 16 years I am able to utilise these skills to offer a wide range of versatile illustrations and designs. My aim is to brighten up the world with my fun, colourful art.

And finally, where can we find you?

When I’m not creating art you can find me hanging out with my entertaining husband and beloved daughter, walking on the beach, watching the sunset, taking photos, writing lists, obsessing over sunflowers and spending time with family and friends.

You can find me online on Instagram @christylou_art and on my website www.christylouart.com.au

Thanks for taking the time to learn a bit more about me.
