What you will need:

  • Fabric (lining and outer, approx 38cm x 65cm each piece)
  • 24cm Velcro
  • Handle (eg. webbing - 25cm)
  • Bias Binding
  • Matching Thread

How to Make it:

Start out by making sure you have 2 rectangles. One will be of your lining fabric, the other of your outer fabric. These need to measure approximately 38cm x 65cm.

Lay these pieces on top of each other with the wrong sides together.

Take one of the short edges and fold over 1cm onto the lining fabric, and then fold again to create a hem. Iron in place and sew down. This will become the top of the pocket.

Fold the hemmed piece up so that you create a large pocket and pin in place. There should be 11cm of your lining piece showing. You can do a small basting stitch if you want.

Make your bias binding or have some premade. Then wrap your binding around the edges of the bag. Starting at one of the bottom corners and working your way all the way around the top to the other bottom corner. Pin or clip in place. Finish each end of the bias by folding it back under itself to prevent any raw edges.

Carefully sew the binding in place

With the top flap folded over as if the bag was closed, mark on the back side of the bag where you would like your handle to be (roughly 15cm from each edge) then position your strap/handle on top of those marks. Pin in place and sew down (but make sure you don't catch the wrong layers as you're sewing)

Take your velcro and position it on the lining side of the top flap. Centre it and pin in place. Sew down.

Repeat with the other piece of velcro onto the outside of the bag. Make sure that it lines up with the top flap piece.

Pop some homework books or library books in and you're all done!
