What's the problem?

Hints and Tips

My Stitches are so uneven

  • Re-thread the machine, ensuring the presser foot is up while threading.
  • Adjust the thread tension settings.
  • Check the bobbin is wound and inserted correctly.
  • Clean the machine, especially around the tension discs and bobbin area.

Seams Aren't Laying Flat:

  • Press seams with an iron - this is often overlooked but can significantly improve the appearance of your seams.
  • Adjust stitch length if it’s too short.
  • Use a walking foot for slippery or stretchy fabrics.

OH NO! The Thread Broke!

What to check for:

  • Could the needle thread not be threaded properly?
  • Could the needle thread tension be too tight?
  • Could the needle be bent or blunt?
  • Could the needle be inserted incorrectly?
  • Could the thread be too heavy or too fine for the needle you are using? Or is the quality of the thread low?
  • Could the needle have a rough spot? Or is the thread catching on the throat plate or bobbin case?

Don't forget to check that the needle thread and the bobbin thread are drawn to the rear of the machine and set properly under the presser foot when you start sewing

And ensure that you are always taking the fabric to the rear of the machine when you finish sewing.

Once again, the Bobbin thread snapped...

What to check for?

  • The bobbin thread is not threaded properly in the bobbin holder
  • Lint may have collected in the bobbin holder
  • The bobbin may be damaged and does not turn smoothly
  • The thread is not wound properly on the bobbin (too loose)

LOOK OUT! My Needle Broke!

What to check for:

  • Has the needle been inserted correctly?
  • Is the needle bent or blunt?
  • Is the needle clamp screw loose?
  • Are you using the correct foot for the project?
  • Are you using the correct needle for the fabric you are sewing? Make sure its not too thin.
  • Avoid pulling or pushing the fabric while sewing
  • Make sure that you are using the correct stitch ie. don't use a zig zag when the needle will hit the foot

Why is my top stitching so loopy and messy?

This usually indicates a top threading problem.

What to try/check:

  • Re-thread the top thread making sure the presser foot is lifted while threading.
  • Increase the upper thread tension slightly.
  • The needle size is not suitable for the thread.

UGH! Why is my machine skipping stitches?

What to check for:

  • The needle is incorrectly inserted.
  • The needle is bent or blunt.
  • The needle and/or thread are not suitable for the fabric being sewn.
  • A blue tip needle is not used for sewing stretch, very fine fabrics and synthetics.
  • A poor quality needle is used.

Re-thread the machine, both the top thread and bobbin.

My Fabric is Puckering! Help!

What to check for:

  • The needle thread is not threaded properly.
  • The stitch length is too long for the fabric.
  • Use a stabilizer for very fine fabrics.
  • Decrease the thread tension.
  • Use the appropriate needle size and type for your fabric.
  • Ensure you're not pulling the fabric as you sew.
  • Check if your sewing speed is too fast, which can sometimes cause puckering.

But my fabric just isn't feeding smoothly...

  • The feed dog is packed with lint.
  • The stitches are too fine.
  • Check if the feed dogs are raised and moving.
  • Make sure you're using the right presser foot and it's attached correctly.

WHAT WAS THAT NOISE!?

What to check:

  • Clean out any lint, dust or thread pieces from the machine
  • Apply sewing machine oil as needed
  • Ensure that all of the parts are properly tightened and secured
  • Unthread and rethread your machine

And of course, if all else fails - Take your machine in for a service
