Sew Along With Us
Are you tired of dealing with tangled cables or earbuds? A DIY cord keeper is a simple yet functional solution to keep your cords neat and organized! Plus, it’s a great way to use up small fabric scraps. Follow this easy tutorial to make your own in no time.
Materials You’ll Need:
- 2 fabric rectangles (6cm x 11cm)
- 1 piece of iron-on interfacing (6cm x 11cm)
- Snap set (or Velcro if you prefer)
- Matching thread
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Scissors
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Prepare Your Fabric:
Cut two fabric rectangles measuring 6cm x 11cm.
Cut one piece of iron-on interfacing of the same size (6cm x 11cm).
Choose a pretty fabric for this project — something sturdy like cotton twill works well!
Attach Interfacing:
Place the interfacing onto the wrong side of one fabric rectangle.
Using an iron, fuse the interfacing to the fabric following the instructions on the interfacing packaging.
Sew the Edges:
Place the two fabric rectangles right sides together (RST).
Sew around three edges, leaving one short end open for turning.
Trim the edges to reduce bulk, especially at the corners. Being careful not to cut through any of the stitching.
Turn It Right Side Out:
Flip the fabric piece right side out through the open edge.
Use a tool (like the blunt end of a pencil) to push out the corners for a neat finish.
Press and Finish:
Iron the entire piece to flatten it out nicely.
Fold in the open edge by about 0.5cm and iron it flat.
Topstitch around the entire cord keeper, catching the folded edge to close it up.
Add Snaps (or Velcro): Tip: You can also sew on Velcro if snaps aren’t your thing!
Decide where you want to place your snaps (or Velcro). Typically, the snaps will go near the each end of the keeper, allowing you to wrap it around your cords and secure in place
Use your snap setter tool to install the snaps, following the instructions provided with your snap set.
Add Your Cables:
Wrap your cord keeper around your cables or earbuds and snap it shut!
That’s it! You’ve just made your own custom cord keeper. These are perfect for traveling or keeping your tech bag organized. Plus, they make great little gifts for friends and family!
Extra Tips:
- Feel free to personalize your cord keeper by using contrasting fabrics
- If you're using a thicker fabric base, you may not need the interfacing.
Now you’re ready to make as many cord keepers as your cords require!
